Summer Soldiers and Sunshine Patriots

Thomas Paine in a series of pamphlets published from 1776 to 1783 called American Crisis wrote,” THESE are the times that try men’s souls.
The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.
Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.
What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value.
Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.
Though this was written in 1776 as the colonists were fighting for their Independence from the tyrannical King George III, but it has some meaning in today’s times as well.
We as citizens of these United States have sat on the sidelines and allowed the freedoms afforded us by the blood of patriots so long ago to be taken from us little by little until our own government has become source of Tyranny in our nation.
That we have sat idly by and allowed those we elect to drive us further into debt, while they accept no responsibility is ludicrous. That we let our legislators erode the freedoms that were paid for with the blood of Patriots not just during our fight for independence but in a myriad of wars since, borders on insane. We allow the Government unfettered access to our personal lives in the name of security. We allow our legislators to pass laws that are restrictive to our personal freedom and just plain bad for the country as a whole yet we say and do nothing. We allow parties to divide us into categories based on belief, sex, race, nationality, political affiliation and many others too numerous to mention. We see the corruption in our Government but we believe there is nothing that can be done, so we live with it.
The founders of this nation provided us with a document so profound that it gave us the recourse to make changes when our government failed us. Yet we the people have allowed that document to be weakened by all three branches of our government.
We have allowed laws to be passed that infringe on our freedom of speech as to quell the discourse we have with our Government.
We have allowed the government to limit our ability to own the weapons necessary to protect ourselves and our families, not just from the lawless of our nation, but from the tyranny of our government as well.
We have allowed the government to search and seize our property and papers without warrant or just cause.
We allow for double jeopardy by allowing separated prosecution for the same crime on state and federal statutes.
We have stacked the deck for the prosecution of crime at every turn against the accused. Unlimited resources for prosecutors and limiting resources for public defenders.
We have removed the power the states had in federal government. If states refuse to go along with federal mandates they are punished with loss of federal funds.
We have given the government the power to enslave us, to take the fruits of our labor to use as they see fit.
We let them make our currency worth whatever they say it is, and we have given other countries the power to bankrupt us.
We have allowed our borders to be crossed with impunity.
How much more do we have to endure before we stand up and defend our rights? The fact that we allow lawlessness to prevail in the name of social justice is not acceptable. The fact that our political process is now for sale should be unacceptable. The fact that lobbyist are writing laws should be unacceptable. The fact that our supreme court is legislating from the bench should be unacceptable. The fact your property can be seized on word of a bureaucrat is unacceptable. The fact we have agencies that were created by executive order, writing regulations without legislative oversight is wholly unacceptable. The fact those same agencies are being given police powers is ludicrous. The list is endless. How much more?
If we do not find the courage, and will to demand the changes that are necessary to protecting our freedom, we will find ourselves at the crossroads of whether to fight or submit to tyranny. Which would you prefer?
